Even in the twenty-first century, the way our society is structured automatically puts differently-abled people at a disadvantage. Whether it’s a lack of inclusion or paucity of opportunities, they are at the bottom of the barrel when it comes to thriving and progressing in the community. In this article, we will discuss what steps can we take to change this.
Firstly, it is important that we make public spaces more accessible for individuals with physical disabilities. This includes, however, is not limited to building wheelchair-friendly ramps, escalators, elevators etc. The maintenance of these facilities is also important and should be done on a regular basis.
There must be more educational and job opportunities for such individuals. It is a pity to see that they are often not even considered for many job vacancies just due to their disabilities. Providing more opportunities will also benefit the economical and financial situation of society. We need to change our perception of looking at these individuals as a liability.
We hope that this article helped outline the role that we must play as a society to build a more inclusive community. What may seem like a small gesture for us, can be a huge deal to individuals who are differently-abled. It is important to be mindful of such details when we conduct ourselves in our day-to-day life and we much maximize our efforts in working towards building a safe space for such individuals to coexist with other members of society.
